New Apple Bar - Bilpin
Pizza Restaurant Bar - Bilpin NSW
The long and winding road past Bilpin's endless line of apple orchards leads to the door of this unassuming roadhouse. Friendly, enthusiastic waiters bounce from table to table, ensuring visitors are well fed, well watered and sent on their way with a happy heart and a full belly. The kitchen delivers more than the menu might suggest. A golden egg yolk rests on a creamy mound of salt-cured bonito, red radish and finger lime caviar, with good, house-made lavosh adding crunch. Chilli-spiked salt-and-pepper calamari pumps up the heat. Gurnard fish 'n' chips style was less successful, under a too-thick batter. But the real heart of this bustling spot is the huge wood-fired oven turning out thin, crisp pizzas, as well as succulent, smoky and sizeable portions of wood-grilled lamb loin with tzatziki. Dessert has to be the house-made green apple sorbet - albeit a grainy, rustic version, made with local apples, of course.
